The Hedgehog and The Bee Art. In Ireland the hedgehog is Brigit’s animal, awakening with her in the spring. when the hedgehog comes out of the ground on feast day its behavior is weather divination. Furthermore Hedgehogs are a hard-working no-nonsense animal. This partially results from the folk belief that hedgehogs collect apples and mushrooms and carry them to their secret storage.

History, Myth, Legend and Lore

Above all the Hedgehog symbolism carries portents of: Energy, Vitality, Intuition, Protection, Perception, Intelligence, Uniqueness & Resourcefulness.

Irish lore associated the hedgehog with witches who could take its form to suck cows dry. On the other hand, in Celtic myth, bees are beings of great wisdom and spirit messengers between worlds. Meanwhile Honey is a magical substance and used in many rituals.

Honey is made into mead and is considered to have prophetic powers which is called the ‘nectar of the gods’. Mead are the rivers that lead to the summer lands. For instance, in ancient European folklore, bees are regarded as messengers of the gods. In short the custom of “Telling the Bees” may be a throwback to the idea of keeping the gods informed of human affairs.
